RENTING A HOUSEBOAT TO EXPLORE THE VASTNESS OF RAYSTOWN LAKE IS ONE OF THE MOST UNIQUE VACATIONS AVAILABLE THROUGHOUT PENNSYLVANIA. ITS ESSENTIALLY A CAMPING ON WATER EXPERIENCE WITH MILD LUXURIES SUCH AS BEDS, RUNNING WATER, A KITCHEN, AND A ROOFTOP WATERSLIDE.
EVEN THOUGH YOU'RE ON THE WATER FOR 5 DAYS AND ARE GENERALLY ALLOTED TO THE FIRST 15 MILES OF THE LAKE, THE VIEWS NEVER GET OLD. YOU'RE GIVEN FREE REIGN TO EXPLORE AS MUCH OR AS LITTLE AS YOU'D LIKE - THERE'S DOZENS OF MILES OF SHORELINE TO CHOOSE FROM FOR AN OVERNIGHT CAMP SPOT AND THE FISHING IS INCREDIBLE NO MATTER WHERE YOU GO ON THE LAKE. MY FAMILY RENTED A HOUSE BOAT OUT OF SEVEN POINTS MARINA FOR 5 DAYS IN MID SEPTEMBER 2021 AND THE EXPERIENCE WAS INCREDIBLY RELAXING - SUNBATHING AND FISHING BY DAY AND STARGAZING AT SOME OF THE MOST INTENSE NIGHT SKIES WE'VE EVER SEEN AFTER DARK.
THERE IS AN INCREDIBLE HISTORY SURROUNDING RAYSTOWN LAKE - WHERE DEPTHS REACH OVER 200 FEET IN SOME PLACES AND DIVERS REPORT SEEING ENTIRE TOWNS, FROZEN IN SPACE AND TIME UNDERNEATH ALL THAT WATER. THE ORIGINAL PATH OF THE JUNIATA RIVER CARVED THROUGH THE VALLEY FLOOR BETWEEN ALLEGRIPPIS RIDGE AND TERRACE MOUNTAIN - FLOWING 30 MILES FROM SOUTHEAST OF HUNTINGON INTO SAXTON. THE TOWNS WERE ESSENTIALLY BOUGHT OUT, RESIDENTS AND BUSINESSES PAID TO RELOCATE, AND THE AREA ALLOWED TO COMPLETELY FILL IN WITH WATER. THE RAYSTOWN PURPLE LIZARD MAP PROVIDES THE CONTRAST BETWEEN THE ORIGINAL FLOW OF THE RIVER AND A DETAILED VERSION OF WHAT RAYSTOWN LOOKS LIKE TODAY.
MOST RECENTLY, THE ARMY CORPS OF ENGINEERS STEPPED IN BETWEEN NOVEMBER 21 AND JANUARY 22 AND ALLOWED THE LAKE TO DROP AN IMPRESSIVE 13 FEET ON AVERAGE TO REPAIR PARTS OF THE RAYSTOWN DAM TO THE FAR NORTH - MARKING THE BEGINNING OF THE 30 MILES THAT MAKE UP RAYSTOWN LAKE.
ASIDE FROM ENJOYING THIS BEAUTIFUL PLACE ON THE WATER, THERE'S VARIOUS OTHER SITES TO REALLY GET A GRASP ON HOW VAST RAYSTOWN REALLY IS. TO THE NORTH, YOU CAN VIEW FROM THE PLATFORMS ADJACENT TO RAYSTOWN DAM. AT THE TOP OF THE PENINSULA MARKING MILE 1 ON THE WATERWAY REST RIDENOUR AND HAWN'S OVERLOOKS. THERE'S VARIOUS WINDOWS OF VIEWING ALONG THE TERRACE MOUNTAIN TRAIL WHICH FOLLOWS THE NATURAL CURVE OF TERRACE MOUNTAIN ON THE SOUTHEAST BORDER OF RAYSTOWN. FURTHER SOUTH, THERE'S TWO ROADSIDE OVERLOOKS - COFFEE RUN, BETWEEN WATERWAY MILES 19 AND 20 AND ENTRIKEN BRIDGE OVERLOOK, JUST SOUTH OF MARKER 20.
